We are Jim Bob and Amy Howard, and this is our Dream Log. Everyday is an adventure; a gift from God. Come along for the ride as we live this adventure called Life together.
Growing up, what I wanted more than anything else was to be a wife and mother. I wanted to marry a man who would love me for me—the me I truly am inside, and I wanted to love my husband for who he really is. Fast forward to college and I met that man. Less than two years later, we were married.
It took a bunch of mistakes, as well as recognizing and forsaking our sinful, broken natures before we really knew each other. But thankfully, God blesses humbled hearts and He allowed us to find the marriage we both wanted deep down inside.
Many years have passed since we got to know each other “warts and all.” And you know what? We love each other more because of the frailness of our flesh. We love each other as a brother and sister in Christ. It is only by Him, through Him, and for Him that we stand united today. To God be the glory!
Lord, You will establish peace for us,
For You have also done all our works in us.
This is Dream #1 continuing to be realized in our day-to-day adventure of life together. It is always dynamic, but the constant is Christ along with deep appreciation and thankfulness for the gift we have in each other.
Dream #2 was children. The Lord blessed us with four! We are so thankful and amazed, really. They are all so different, with different strengths and weaknesses. Never in my life, with all its hopes and desires, did I think I would see this much creativity, intellect, talent, focus, or intense desire for FOOD!
Dream #3: Raise our children to love God, His world, and the many different people in it. This is a dream still very much in progress. It takes a long time for this one! Each child has different levels of understanding, varying degrees of readiness, and vast ranges of maturity. We will be in this phase for quite some time to come.
Going along with Dream #3, is Dream #4: To travel the world with our children. The best way we know to disciple our children in loving others who are different from us, is to show them those people. We have done quite a bit of that already while at home in the U.S., but America is not the whole world. God said to His Son in Psalm 2:8, “Ask of Me, and I will give You the the nations for Your inheritance.” This is Dream #4: take ourselves and our children to those nations and help them see the rest of God’s world and peoples.
Meet Jim Bob
When I was little, I wanted to be a clown, play skee-ball at Six Flags, and own a Ferrari. And I only had a vague idea of what it might be like to grow up, get married, and have children. Pretty much, life was all about me. I thought all it takes to be a husband is to get married; all it takes to be a father is to have children.
I used to think a wedding was a simple affair: Boy and girl meet. They fall in love. He buys a ring, she buys a dress. They say “I do.”
I was wrong.
That’s getting married.
A wedding… is an entirely different proposition.” —George Banks, Father of the Bride
Staying married, that’s what really takes work. Relationships are messy, because they involve people. Sinful people. Selfish people. People who—in our case—don’t have a clue how to have a good marriage. We bungled it. Messed it up. Derailed it. And tried very hard to drive it right off a cliff.
God had other plans. And I’m so glad He did.
Along the way, He gave us four incredible children, each gifted in his or her own way, each with challenges, and each bringing more messiness to our lives.
Where there are no oxen, the manger is clean, but abundant crops come by the strength of the ox. —Prov. 14:4
Where there are no children, the house is clean, but abundant blessings come by the gift of the child. —2nd Opinions, 16:8 (Me)
We don’t have it all figured out, but by God’s grace, we usually feel like we’re taking more steps forward than backward.
This “d-log” (dream log) is our means of recording our day-to-day life, as well as keeping us accountable to realizing our dreams, even as we surrender it all to the Lord.
Here you will find posts about:
Family: Marriage – We hope to remember our lives together as well as inspire and encourage others in marriage, along with a little dancing around the kitchen. Children – The daily shenanigans of life with our kids. We hope to encourage, learn, and record memories. Discipleship – Our own, as well as that of our children. According to God’s teaching in the Bible.
Food: Hospitality – We like to eat and try new things, so posts regarding food will be frequent. Allergies – We’ve had varying health issues, food allergies/intolerances, and budget constraints; so you will find various levels of vegan, vegetarian, nut-free, dairy-free, soy-free, GMO-free, organic, meatless, etc. meals that Amy has developed to feed our growing family. Creations – Amy loves to be creative in the kitchen, so there will be many recipes, tweaks, and favorite resources shared. Jim Bob has often said, “Amy can go into the kitchen with nothing but pocket fluff and come out with Chicken Cordon Bleu.”
Fun: Laughter – We laugh a lot; we can even get downright silly (ask about Jim Bob’s Orangutan Walk and Minnie Mouse impersonations). We hope you’ll laugh with us, or at least at us. Travel – As we make progress toward this dream, we will share our goals, ideas, and plans. We hope to learn from those of you who have already traveled far and wide, as well as inspire others to do the same.
WHEW! That’s a LOT! We are excited to have you share our dreams. We want to hear from you. Really, we do! Feel free to comment, give advice, ask questions, pass on resources, etc. We hope to learn much in the gift of each day the Lord gives us, and we’re excited to have you along for the adventure! Thanks for joining us!
