Three Prayers That Change a Marriage

Three Prayers that Change a Marriage | www.AmyJoeJimBob.com

About four years ago we went through some really difficult times in our lives. Our energy was low, we were tired, and at times we got a bit grumpy with each other.

I was irritated, tired, stressed-out, and started having trouble seeing the best in my husband.

Stressed

How about you? Have you ever gone through a time like this?

Every marriage goes through its ups and downs—it’s part of life. But what is harmful is when we take out our frustrations on one another.

Angry Wife

We had gone through such a time, but I didn’t want to allow hard times to translate into trouble for our marriage, so I began asking the Lord to show me what I can do to help us through the rough spot we were enduring.

I kept praying, and the answer finally came on New Year’s Day 2010.

The Prayer Project

I was praying again, mostly about what my goals should be for the coming year, and the Lord turned my heart toward my husband:

What if my New Year’s resolution was to pray just three things for my husband daily?

Those three things were that the Lord would:
1. Bless
2. Prosper, and
3. Show Favor

…to my husband: first in God’s eyes, then in our eyes, then at work, then with everyone and in every situation he would find himself.

What a journey it has been!

What I never expected was the complete change, for the better, in my heart.

Through God’s eyes I could see Jim Bob’s struggles and stress more clearly. I could see how much he needed my support. My eyes were opened to how much Jim Bob simply needed me to be his best friend, confidante, and prayer-warrior through the rough spots (and always, really).

In short, when this prayer project began, I was praying for my husband but the Lord started with me.

The work within my heart was essential. If I couldn’t see Jim Bob’s world from his perspective, how would I be able to pray effectively for him? How would I know how best to pray? How could I truly empathize?

Start praying these things for your spouse, and you will see what I mean: the change MUST start with YOU.

Over the last few years of praying this daily for my sweet man, we’ve seen God do some pretty incredible things.

Yes, miracles DO still happen.

Stay tuned as we share the miracles! 🙂

    Amy,
Thank you so much for this post! I have been reading these (since Jim Bob posts them on Facebook) for a while now, but was so moved by this one that I decided to try it. God gave me 1 Peter 5:10 and have been praying these 4 things over Bill since Thanksgiving. The transformation in him AND me has been incredible. Thanks again for the inspiration!

      Sweet Kim,

It brings such incredible joy to my heart to know this post is helping you guys! I love the scripture you are praying. How have you prayed, specifically? Great big blessings and hugs to you guys from both of us, and if there is anything we can pray for you, please let us know. And thank you for reading… And for letting us know you are! 🙂

I’ve come to realize that prayer is such a powerful force in my heart and marriage when I lift my husband up on a daily basis. And I love these three simple ways to pray for our husbands. I’m in a marriage prayer group and we’ve prayed in more specific ways for each other, but this can be a bit overwhelming to do since our group has gotten larger. I’m looking for a way to simplify the process, so this gives me lots of food for thought, Amy Joe! Thanks also for stopping by my place. Nice to meet ya!

Thank you so much for your sweet comment! My hope in writing this post is that other people will be encouraged to pray for their spouses with an open heart and a willingness to let the Lord change all that needs changing for His glory. I’m immensely grateful that it ministered to you and might help you simplify your prayers for your husband. Our men need that prayer, but more specifically they need their wives to be strong in the Lord so we can back them up and help them be strong. I hope and pray this series will bless other marriages in the Lord!

      Blessings to you 🙂

Thank you for stopping by, Stephanie! And you are right – all we can do is let God change us and hand over all our worries, fears, and frustrations regarding others to the One who can work miracles. When you get a chance, read my husband’s post series on the miracles we saw in Africa. God went way above and beyond what I ever thought I was asking for when I prayed for Jim Bob.

Blessings to you and yours this Advent season,
      AmyJoe
